St Marthas Care Home stands in beautiful and well-presented gardens. It is situated in Stechford, about three miles from Birmingham city centre, close to train and bus stations, and is a five minute walk from a retail park.
We always ensure that our visitors are greeted warmly and made to feel welcome in a homely environment. That’s important, because many of them come to us in a state of anxiety, particularly if they are looking for a Care Home for a loved one, so we like to make them feel at ease.
We believe in keeping our residents active, and we have Activity Co-ordinators who organise a weekly activity rota based on the things residents would like to do. This includes bingo – we have a passionate team! – board games, singing, entertainers and much more. In one activity residents tell each other about their pasts. We also arrange special events, such as a Halloween party, with creative activities and dressing up; Remembrance Day, when residents can make their own poppy, and a Christmas Fete, with cake-baking and fund-raising. There are also Skype sessions. One resident Skyped her son in Canada, who she hadn’t seen for four years!
The residents enjoy baking biscuits and cakes. An Irish resident makes Irish bread which everyone enjoys. The Home has a very mixed menu, including Caribbean, Asian and English food. Recently, a resident, who had never had spicy food in over 90 years, had Asian chicken curry, and he really enjoyed it!
We ensure that the residents keep in touch with the wider community. Groups of residents are taken out for walks to the local park, or a drive to visit a part of their history: a place that might hold treasured memories. Local churches regularly come in to hold services, we have a chiropodist visit every month and a hairdresser every week.

Akari Care is a family of Residential Care Homes spread across the UK, with the largest concentration of homes in the north-east. We choose the word ‘family’ with good reason, because in many ways it epitomises our values. Each Care Home we view as an extended family, bringing together residents and their families, our colleagues in care, clinicians, hairdressers, commissioners and CQC regulators, members of the local community – the list goes on. In this way, we are able to create a warm and inclusive environment in which our residents can feel a real sense of security and belonging, while at the same time retaining their dignity and self respect.
We never compromise on the quality of our services, nor would you expect us to. Our extended team includes trusted GPs, Dentists, Chiropodists and Dieticians, who all work hard to improve our residents’ quality of life. Our dementia Care Homes have qualified, dedicated staff who help people to maintain their identity and dignity.
